Camping Checklist 2025: Everything You Need to Pack

Updated 2025-04-01 00:00:00 +0000 UTC

Tip: This list covers car camping. Backpackers should cut weight aggressively — skip anything marked "car camping only" and look for ultralight alternatives in our gear reviews.

A camping trip lives or dies by what you packed. Forget your sleeping bag and the whole trip is wrecked. Forget your headlamp and everything after sunset is a comedy of errors. This checklist is organized by category so you can go through it systematically before you leave.

How to Customize This List

Solo backpacking: Cut everything car-camping-specific. Max weight is your constraint. See our best backpacking tent and sleeping bag guides for lightweight options.

Family camping: Add kid-specific items (sunscreen for kids, extra clothes changes, entertainment for camp). Upgrade tent to at least a 6-person for a family of 4.

Winter camping: Double your insulation layers. Bring a four-season tent or at minimum a strong three-season with a winter rating. Synthetic sleeping bag insulation over down for moisture management.
